Become Involved-Volunteer 2009-10!
We realize that each person would like to be able to give freely of their time and talents so that students at Bollinger Canyon have the best possible educational experience. However, we also realize that there are only so many hours in a given day! This volunteer information has been compiled so that you may choose those activities that are best suited to your interests and talents as well as your individual schedules. We encourage you to become involved at Bollinger Canyon. There truly is a place for everyone!
Please feel free to contact any committee chair or PTA member listed in this booklet or on the roster with questions on how you can help. We want to hear from you!!

Health Safety
The Health Safety Committee is a very important committee for the well being of our children. Volunteers are essential in fulfilling many responsibilities: traffic patrol, lunchroom helpers, noon duty/playground helpers, Red Ribbon Week, and vision and hearing screening. Work one day or everyday! Whatever time you can give will benefit all of our kids at Bollinger!
Contact: Michelle Rodrigue at cm3kids@yahoo.com
Traffic Patrol
Parents are needed to volunteer for early bird and late bird traffic patrol.
The early bird traffic patrol schedule is from 8:15 am to 8:35 am and the late bird traffic patrol schedule is from 9:05 am to 9:25 am. We want to ensure that our children get dropped off safely and are attended until their bell rings. Sign up for this position and if you end up having a conflict, you are not obligated to volunteer for that time period.
Lunch Room Helpers
Lunch room helpers assist and supervise the students during the different lunch breaks. The first lunch break is for first and second grades, the second lunch break is for third grade and the third lunch break is for the fourth and fifth grades.
Noon Duty/Playground
Noon Duty volunteers help on the playground during the lunch recesses. This is a great way to connect with the children. Everyone should have experience with the kids out at the playground. This is a time that they can personally choose what they want to do. Please consider helping at the playground for Noon Duty at least one day a week. The more parents out on the playground with our children the better. It’s a fun way to meet other parents, and you will enjoy getting to know the kids at Bollinger.
Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to unite schools and communities in an effort to create a drug-free America. This event is historically in October. Volunteers are needed to help the Health Safety Committee with special Red Ribbon Week activities focusing on healthy and drug free lifestyles.
Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and hearing screening occurs annually. The school district screens all students in kindergarten, second and fifth grades as well as any teacher referrals. Volunteers are needed to assist the Audiologist and the Optometrist, in addition to escorting children from their classrooms to the testing locations. Testing is usually over a three-day period. Volunteers are needed for all three days.
Emergency and First Aid Supplies
Volunteers are needed to check, re-stock and update emergency backpacks and first aid kits that are located in each classroom and in the white container on the blacktop
Hospitality
This committee is responsible for organizing and providing snacks and refreshments for events throughout the school year including school registration, Welcome Back Coffee for parents and the Reflections showcase. The committee needs volunteers to periodically help with set up and clean up for selected events. Hospitality would like to begin a “Welcome Wagon” type function, welcoming new families to the school, providing tours of the school, and orientation on activities and services. The committee would need volunteers to help with this.

Kids Night Out
Kids Night Out is a great program for both our children and us. The students bring their sleeping bags, pillows and special stuffed animals to a fun-filled evening of a G-rated movie, popcorn and time with their friends. This is a student-only event but can only happen with a minimum number of parent volunteers. The time commitment is minimal. Volunteers are asked to help with set-up, check-in and greeting the children, supervising the students during the film and assisting them with clean up at the end of the evening. This is a fun way to get to know the students and parents of Bollinger Canyon.

A committee volunteer can anticipate being asked to:
· Attend local meetings to stay informed and speak on behalf of Bollinger Canyon.
· Organize and participate in voter registration drives and/or telephone campaigns that support ballot measures which are endorsed by PTA and support issues that are in the best interest of our children.
· Attend the annual trip to Sacramento to meet with our legislative representatives on issues that concern education.
This committee can always use parents to assist in letter writing campaigns and phone trees for communicating concerns to our legislators and our community officials.

Primo’s Run
Primo’s Run for Education has been an annual event in San Ramon Valley for 26 years. It is the main fundraising event for The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF), of which the Bollinger Canyon Education Fund is an affiliate. SRVEF is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes educational programs in conjunction with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. SRVEF raises money to support district-wide programs as well as monetary grants to individual schools and teachers within the SRVUSD. The primary event is the Primo’s Race for Education, which will take place on a Sunday October 11, 2009. It involves three events: a Half Marathon, a 10K Run, and a 5K Family Run/Walk. Adult volunteers are needed to help with registration, parking, start/finish line coordinators and more. Your participation will make a great difference because Bollinger receives $50 for every 10 adult volunteers. In addition, Bollinger earns money based upon the number of participants that specify BOLLINGER on the registration form. Last year, 25% of our school registered which earned Bollinger $750. For more information or to register, please visit www.primosrun.com.

Room Parents
Volunteering as a room parent is one the most important and fulfilling ways of volunteering at Bollinger Canyon. They are a vital link between the teachers and the parent community. Room parents work with the classroom teachers to plan classroom parties, organize volunteers for field trips and other classroom activities. With the assistance of other parents, they coordinate teacher appreciation activities and end of year activities. Room parents may also be asked by their teacher to assist with other classroom activities and projects. Responsibilities vary from teacher to teacher. One head room parent and several assistant room parents are needed for each classroom. One room parent is asked to take pictures of their class for the yearbook. This is a wonderful to get to know your child’s teacher as well as all of the students in their class. Each teacher will have sign-up sheets in their classroom at Back to School Night.

Yearbook
The Yearbook Committee is seeking one or more parents per classroom willing to volunteer as “Classroom Photographer.” These parents should be available during classroom activities such as parties, field trips, and special events to take pictures and supply them to the yearbook committee for possible placement in the Bollinger Canyon yearbook. One volunteer from each class should be responsible for making sure their class has enough quality pictures submitted for the yearbook. This way the yearbook can be balanced with pictures from all the classes.
